How We Use Technology in Dentistry

At Niles Family Dentistry, we use the latest technology. This not only allows us to be at the cutting edge of dentistry, but it keeps up with Dr. Niles’ commitment to being eco-friendly. Through technology, we’re able to eliminate paper for charts and insurance claims, along with chemicals to process X-rays. Why is Technology Used in Dentistry?

By using the latest technology, we are at the cutting edge of dentistry. Additionally, we are able to continue with our commitment to being eco-friendly. Technology allows us to eliminate the majority of paper use for charts and insurance claims, as well as eliminating the chemicals to process x-rays. To explain further, here is how Dr. Ashley Niles and the Niles Family Dentistry team uses technology:

CariVu Technology

Using CariVu technology takes our diagnostic power to a whole new level. CariVu technology provides Dr. Niles with one of the best caries detection devices currently on the market.

Dental caries, more commonly known as cavities, is a level of tooth decay. This technology allows us to work to prevent cavities and help you protect and care for your teeth. Traditionally, x-rays have been the tool of choice for getting a look inside at the health of your teeth. Unfortunately, x-ray technology has its limitations. CariVu technology is a cavity detection device. It provides more accurate images of the teeth through bathing them in safe, near-infrared light.

When this transillumination technology is used, the enamel will appear transparent on our images, whereas porous lesions (a.k.a areas of tooth decay and cavities) will absorb the light and appear dark. We can see inside the tooth to examine its structure and the presence of any dental caries—even ones that are in the beginning stages. This technology allows us to easily find any level of cavity that might be in your mouth. Further, it is more effective than x-ray imaging and eliminates radiation from the imaging process.

Paperless Charting

Niles Family Dentistry is working to become solely digital, meaning we are trying to become a paperless dental office. This means all x-rays and charting are made and recorded by using computers. Not only does this allow us to maintain your dental records electronically, but it also cuts down the unnecessary paperwork used with traditional paper charting.

Charting with paper is a dated practice that is difficult to keep standardized throughout offices. Moreover, handwriting differences and coding make each chart look different and can be hard to decipher and understand at times. The computer eliminates this problem by using consistent charting methods that are accurate and precise. This makes it easy to read your dental chart and see up-to-date information.

Digital charting standardizes the charting process so it:

  • Is clear and easy to understand,
  • Enables us to provide the most accurate and precise care to our patients

Further, digital charting makes it easier to share your records securely with your other doctors.

More benefits of being a paperless office include that it:

  • Saves time, space, and money
  • Eases the hassle of transferring paper records and information
  • Works to protect the environment
  • Boosts security

Digital X-rays

At Niles Family Dentistry, we also use digital radiography which allows us to take x-rays using significantly less radiation than conventional film x-rays. In fact, the total amount of radiation exposure using this is less than the amount of exposure you’d get standing out in the sun for 10 minutes.

Using digital x-rays, we are able to take an x-ray of your mouth by using a small sensor which records the image of your teeth and sends it to a computer. The result is a highly detailed image of your mouth that can easily be enlarged and looked at to better diagnose dental concerns and determine the very best treatment for each case.

Electronic Claims

To make sure that our patients get the most out of their insurance benefits as soon as possible, our office utilizes electronic claims processing. This means that rather than sending your dental claim through the mail, it is sent electronically to your insurance company with the click of the button. This benefits our patients because the turnaround time on claims is faster and fewer claims are returned or denied. We are happy to submit your dental claims to your insurance company on your behalf. If you have any questions about claims, don’t hesitate to ask our office.

Intraoral Camera

To better visualize and understand the conditions in your mouth we use small cameras about the size of a pen, called an intraoral camera, to help our team be able to clearly see your teeth and gums. With this kind of camera, we can easily zoom in and see infection, cracks, chips, and more with nearly exact precision. The full-color images taken with the intraoral camera are sent to a computer screen so we can clearly see and diagnose dental problems much earlier than with traditional dental technology.
