How Technology is Changing the Field of Dentistry

dental technology

The current digital revolution is transforming every facet of our world and the field of dentistry is no exception. Today’s dental office provides patients the benefits of digital x-rays, electronic record-keeping, intraoral cameras, new diagnostic tools (like CariVu), invisible braces, and revolutionary treatment and prevention options. Learn how you can benefit from the technology that’s in the field of dentistry!

The Field of Dentistry

The field of dentistry has come quite a long ways since people first became concerned with their teeth. Dentistry has been practiced for many centuries, even dating back to the ancient Egyptians and Ancient Greeks. However, dental methods were more basic in centuries past. For many people, it is still a practice today to simply pull a tooth that is causing you pain or discomfort. However, in the United States, we benefit from countless advances in technology that make visiting the dentist an easy and quick event instead of something painful and dreadful.

The field of dentistry involves a professional who has completed 4 years of an undergraduate degree. The dentist then must attend dental school for another 2-3 years to learn how to perform all the procedures and services your teeth need. Dr. Niles performs services such as:

  • Comprehensive exams
  • Dental cleanings
  • Oral cancer screenings
  • Tooth extractions
  • Laser cavity detection
  • Periodontal treatment
  • Dental sealants and fillings
  • Sleep apnea therapy
  • Digital x-rays
  • Dentures
  • Cosmetic bonding
  • Teeth whitening
  • Porcelain crowns and veneers
  • Root canal therapy

Digitized Technology

It seems that in modern times, everything is becoming digitized, especially in the field of dentistry. In our office, we utilize electronic record keeping in order to cut down on paper waste. This is part of our initiative to be an eco-friendly dental office. Niles Family Dentistry has a passion for the environment and is committed to preserving that beauty by being as eco-friendly as possible. At our office, we recycle or reuse as many products as possible and we only use natural cleaning products that are free of harmful chemicals. We are also a mercury-free practice.

One of the most basic services we provide our patients during their comprehensive exam is digital x-rays. We only use digital x-rays, which means that there are no chemicals used to develop conventional x-rays. Using digital technology also means that we are using less radiation. Dental practices that use digital x-rays emit up to 90% less radiation than other practices. Going digital is the way to go when it comes to getting you results quicker and helping the environment in the process!

Intraoral Cameras

Have you ever wondered what the dentist is doing inside your mouth? You don’t have to wonder anymore! Intraoral cameras are an amazing tool that our patients can utilize in-office. These are cameras that are connected to dental tools we use. They allow the patient to view on a screen what the dentist is doing inside their mouth. If we spot signs of tooth decay, gum disease, oral cancer lesions or other abnormalities, we can easily show you our findings through using an intraoral camera. This technology is especially helpful in explaining dental services and terms to children. Ask about this at your next appointment!

CariVu Technologycavity detection

Our new CariVu technology takes our diagnostic power to a whole new level! Our main goal is to keep your teeth healthy and to detect cavities so that they can be fixed before becoming large. Some other names for cavities are “tooth decay” and “dental caries”. We have powerful caries detection devices to find your cavities. Traditionally, x-rays have been the tool of choice for getting a look inside at the health of your teeth. However, x-rays have their limitations at times. CariVu technology is a caries detection device that creates more accurate images of your teeth through bathing them in near-infrared light.

This light is safe to use on our patients and won’t expose you to harmful radiation. When this transillumination technology is used, your tooth enamel will appear transparent on our images. However, areas with tooth decay will appear dark on our images, showing us the exact size, shape and location of a cavity. We can use this technology to catch a cavity in its earliest stages, where it is very simple to fix.

Invisible Braces

Although more training is required for orthodontics, there are many dental practices that offer their patients invisible braces through Invisalign. Invisalign is a revolutionary option for straightening your teeth without advertising to others that you are wearing braces. This is a series of transparent aligners that are custom-made for your teeth. We provide you with aligners that you switch out every 1-2 weeks until your teeth become straight. They are proven effective just like traditional metal braces, except they are invisible! If you’ve not yet received orthodontic treatment, consider investing in Invisalign.
